🍽️HOW TO MAKE
This is recipe is very easy to make and comes together really quickly. It’s great for a busy night if you want to make it on the stove or put it in the crock pot and let it cook for a bit.
COOKING STEPS
Step 1
Crock Pot Method: Brown the ground beef and onions in a skillet on top of the stove and drain. Place hamburger and onions along with the tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, garlic, Worcestershire and brown sugar in the crock pot on low for 3 to 4 hours or high for 2 hours.
Step 2
Skillet Method: Brown ground beef and onions, drain. Add remaining ingredients and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.

⭐TIP
You can easily double or triple this recipe for a larger group. We like to make this one in the crock pot because it gives the ingredients time to marry and adds to the flavor.
Also you can make any of our sloppy joe recipes with ground turkey or ground chicken. We have made it with both and love it.

(here’s how I serve mine: I lightly butter the insides of the bun, then grill them – oh, my, what an extra tasty presentation!) My husband LOVES sloppy joes, and I’ll just bet he will enjoy this version, but before I make them, I have a question: I have read somewhere, (and you know how that goes) that if you put too little or too much in a crock pot, it will not cook properly, and yet the size of a crock pot is never mentioned in any recipe I see. Is there a standard? or is what I read “somewhere” wrong? p.s. Glad to see I can prepare stove top, but i imagine the crock pot adds a new dimension to the flavor.
Everything in this is already cooked when you put it in the crock pot, so the size doesn’t really matter. It just a way to let the flavors really combine before you serve it and it’s great for a gathering as everyone can make their sandwich and it keeps the meat warm. We like each both ways but often just make it on the stove top if its just a few people.
This is THE best sloppy joe recipe I’ve ever tasted! Thanks so much!
You are so welcome! Thrilled it was a hit. We love this recipe too!
Love it quick way to fix both ways
I made this with the dill pickle pasta salad yesterday. (I’ll review the pasta salad on that page.) Excellent flavors in the sloppy joe meat mixture! My mother said it reminded her of the sloppy joes she used to have as a kid.
Thank you for the kind comment. We’re thrilled they were a hit!
This is THE best sloppy joe recipe! I have been searching for a tasty yet easy recipe and Ifound it! My husband comments about how good they are every single time I make this recipe!
I am in the midst of a kitchen renovation – no cooktop or oven – and have been making a lot of crock pot recipes. Can I put the meat and onion in the crock pot without browning first? In other words, put it all the ingredients in, stir and go?
I have never cooked ground beef in a crock pot, I cant advise.
I used 93% beef so I would not have a lot of grease build up. I turned my crock pot on high and put the beef in to cook while i cut the onions. I then added the onions and let the mixture cook for a bit (stirring occasionally) before I added the rest of the ingredients. I turned the crock pot to low and cooked for 4-5 hours. It was delicious!
Your Sloppy Joe recipe sounds like one I need to try. My mom made them when I was growing up, but I never had her recipe and haven’t found one yet that tastes as good as hers did.
This is a great recipe! One of our favorite go to meals and we will continue to make it often!
I just put this together on the crock pot for Supper tonight. I tasted it before it started simmering in the crock pot and it was delicious then. ☺ I can’t wait for Supper now. So easy and so flavorful. Thank you for sharing!
You’re so welcome! So glad you love it.
Made these for supper last night and we all enjoyed them. Thank you for another yummy recipe!
Thank you, Karen! Happy you enjoyed the recipe. Have a great week ahead.
Trying the sloppy joes tomorrow, thank you!!
Can this be frozen? It’s just me and I need to be able to freeze leftovers.
Hi Debbie,
I would think this recipe would freeze fine. Thanks!
Absolutely delicious! We’ve tried many Sloppy Joe’s, but this one is my husband’s favorite. It’s the perfect consistency and flavors. I’ve bookmarked this recipe to use for many more meals!
Thank you so much, Terri, for the wonderful comment and rating. So happy you are enjoying the recipe and hubby, too.
this recipe is so delicious and very easy. I really like how you can cook in crockpot or stove top. I use dries mixed onions in place of fresh onions because we aren’t an onion family and they go bad before I can get to them. A++++
We’re so glad you liked it! This is one of our favorites, too!
