SLOPPY JOES – Crock Pot or Stove Top

Sloppy Joes - The Southern Lady Cooks

Sloppy joes have always been a favorite with my family. This easy recipe for homemade sloppy joes can be made in the crock pot or on the stove top.  If you are in a hurry make them on top of the stove or if you want them to simmer to let the ingredients marry and come together put them in the crock pot for a few hours.  We like them in the crock pot because we think they are better that way.  Either way, they are good.  You could double or triple this recipe and keep it warm to serve right from the crock pot to guests.  This is great for gatherings, tailgating and having people over.  Just add some pickles and chips and you have a meal.  This can be reheated and keeps well refrigerated for several days.  You might also like our recipe for French dip sliders.

“This recipe is so delicious and very easy. I really like how you can cook in crockpot or stove top. I use dried mixed onions in place of fresh onions because we aren’t an onion family and they go bad before I can get to them. A++++” -Teresa

  1. I made this with the dill pickle pasta salad yesterday. (I’ll review the pasta salad on that page.) Excellent flavors in the sloppy joe meat mixture! My mother said it reminded her of the sloppy joes she used to have as a kid.5 stars

  3. I am in the midst of a kitchen renovation – no cooktop or oven – and have been making a lot of crock pot recipes. Can I put the meat and onion in the crock pot without browning first? In other words, put it all the ingredients in, stir and go?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I have never cooked ground beef in a crock pot, I cant advise.

      1. I used 93% beef so I would not have a lot of grease build up. I turned my crock pot on high and put the beef in to cook while i cut the onions. I then added the onions and let the mixture cook for a bit (stirring occasionally) before I added the rest of the ingredients. I turned the crock pot to low and cooked for 4-5 hours. It was delicious!5 stars

  4. Your Sloppy Joe recipe sounds like one I need to try. My mom made them when I was growing up, but I never had her recipe and haven’t found one yet that tastes as good as hers did.
