These smokey bbq sloppy joes have quickly become a family favorite.

We love sloppy joes in my house. They are super easy and a great dinner option during a busy week. This recipe calls for smoked paparika and liquid smoke which gives them a fabulous smokey flavor. Add in your favorite bbq sauce and you have a wonderful sloppy joe! I like to melt cheese on the top of my sandwiches to make them extra gooey and sloppy.

Smokey BBQ Sloppy Joes

1 lb of lean ground beef

1/2 cup of sweet peppers, diced

1/2 cup of onion, diced

1/2 cup of bbq sauce (I used hickory)

1 6oz can of tomato paste

2 tablespoons of brown sugar

1 tablespoon of yellow mustard

1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon of liquid smoke (I used the mesquite flavor)

1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika

chopped bacon (optional)

Sauté onion and diced pepper over medium heat until tender. Add ground beef and cook through until no longer pink. Place meat and the remainder of ingredients in a crock pot on low for 2 hours or so. You may need to add water to make sure it doesn’t stick. I think slow cooking this sauce a bit longer helps bring out the flavor. You can certainly do it on top of the stove.

For cooking on top of the stove: Brown ground beef, onions and peppers. Drain.   Add remaining ingredients and cook for 15 to 20 minutes.

Optional: Spoon over hamburger buns and top with a slice of cheddar cheese.  Place on baking sheet (without top bun) and broil for 1-2 min to melt cheese. I have added chopped bacon to these smokey bbq sloppy joes and it’s delicious!
