Yeah that’s a keeper. Made it for probably the 5th time now.
I don’t do the swirl..,I sprinkle some nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon on top.
Also add a handful of nuts and cinnamon to the batter.
    My new favorite5 stars

  2. I have been making this recipe for years. Sometimes I just mix the swirl stuff in the batter though… but everyone loves it! Thank you for a lovely recipe! It’s foolproof!5 stars

  5. I have not made Banana Bread in a few years, as I lost my favorite recipe and have been afraid to try an unfamiliar one.
I went back and forth about the sour cream and ended up adding it, as well as dried cranberries because I had no raisins. We love them both so I will let you know how it turns out!
I also put the batter in a Bundt pan!
It is baking now and smells heavenly!
This was such a a fun and easy recipe to make. I tasted the batter before I added eggs…honestly, had to stop myself from having more! I tried very hard not to overmix.so I have high hopes!
I will update you after we eat it!5 stars

  6. S. Brightwell says:

Hi! I am making this recipe on Tuesday. Is it possible to substitute the sour cream for vanilla pudding mix? Or do they not do the same thing? Thanks in advance.

    1. I wouldnt think that would work, the sour cream is the a liquid and the vanilla pudding mix (I am assuming) is a powder. You need the liquid.

  7. Virginia Butitta says:

I made it last week, it is the best!5 stars

  15. Christine says:

Great banana bread! I googled one because it was faster than finding my usual one on Pinterest. (Lazy, I know!) As soon as I tasted the batter I knew it’d be a hit. I did add nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and cinnamon, but I think the sour cream made a huge difference. I added in a few diced strawberries and swapped the vanilla extract for strawberry in the glaze. Will def be saving this recipe. Thank you! 🙂5 stars

  16. N. Oliver says:

  19. I made the recipe and the bread was dry, did I do something wrong?

    1. Yes, you over mixed the batter or you cooked it too long. I would give it another try!

  20. Cindy Davis says:

Can i make up he batter and put it in the fridge to cook tomorrow?
    Thank you.

    1. I think you could but I have never tried it. The bananas will probably turn dark in the batter.

  21. Does this freeze well –5 stars

  22. This looks great, especially how you do the topping.

But I have 1 extra ingredient that takes it to another level…
Blueberries. About 125g for the size you are making which you combine with the main ingredients.
The combination of the two is really tasty.5 stars

  23. Lynn Rasmusson says:

  25. By far the best I have ever had.. and I have made a lot of banana bread recipes in my day. I love your recipes and I know you have made them and your family loves them, which is why I always come back to your website. This one is definitely a keeper.5 stars

    1. We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed this one, thank you SOO much for the kind words!

  26. Made this for breakfast this morning and I agree..it is the best! My whole family agrees. Such an easy recipe, and I followed it to a T. Love your website, the recipes never disappoint!5 stars

  27. More like worst banana bread ever! Basically inedible. While the inside was moist, it was very dense and did not rise sufficiently; the outside was too hard. The swirl was about twice the amount necessary. Also, why is not the oven temperature listed at the top of the recipe? That’s the first thing a baker does, preheat the oven. We shouldn’t have to go searching for this information. The writer of this recipe does not seem to be familiar with basic terminology, such as an ungreased pan, a greased pan or a greased and floured pan. I agree with other’s comments, and I don’t think she did anything wrong. I have been baking for 50 years, I do know what I’m doing. And if you don’t like these criticisms, I cannot think of a more appropriate use of the phrase, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.”

    1. Mary… thank you for the laugh this evening.. it was much needed. I guess all the other people that had success with this recipe.. that was just a fluke? They have no clue what they are doing? If you don’t like the recipe, then simply move on.. not every recipe is for everyone and not every recipe everyone can make. Have a great Sunday!

    2. If you can’t bake this banana bread don’t blame The Southern Lady Cooks. This is a simple recipe anyone can make.5 stars

    3. I think the only thing that is clear here is that you have absolutely no idea how to bake. 5 stars

    4. Maybe the problem was with the person making and baking this recipe. Majority loved it. If you can’t bake….stay out of the kitchenthis was delicious5 stars

    5. Mary, I am sorry to hear that you did not care for your banana bread experience.
This is my first time making this recipe and I loved everything about it. I even tasted it before I added the eggs and it was super good!
I hope you’ll trying it again, maybe a half recipe? If you really do not like it you can fed it to the crows.
Hope you have a good weekend.5 stars

  28. What size/weight/ripeness were the bananas? The recipe all calls for 1 stick butter/8 tbsp. or 1/2 cup melted butter interchangeably. Is it a stick of butter, softened butter, or melted butter? My bread came out incredibly dense, overcooked at 50 mins with my oven being temped at 350 degrees. I had 335g from 3 very ripe bananas and 8 tbsp. butter weighed to 112g then melted. Everything else was baked according to the recipe. Where did I go wrong. I had to throw it away. It was inedible.2 stars

    1. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup of melted butter…which is ONE STICK of butter or 8 TABLESPOONS. The recipe also calls for 3 medium bananas. If your bread was dense, you over mixed it or over baked it. All oven temps vary, so you will need watch your bread when baking it. This bread has incredible reviews and is one of our most popular, it’s clear that something was definitely done wrong, but I would recommend trying again!!

    2. Maybe you should give this one another try.. I mean if you read the comments you can clearly see this is a fantastic recipe. Not sure exactly where you went wrong, but this is a wonderful banana bread. My whole family loved it.5 stars

  29. Maria Vanderhoef says:

Yall had no business making a banana this delicious. This recipe is the best I’ve ever had. Thank you!5 stars

  30. Great recipe! Love the cinnamon nut swirl. I considered omitting the glaze but decided to do recipe exactly. I probably used less, but I’m glad I included it. My cook time was 50 minutes! I used a dark pan which may have contributed. If you use unsalted butter, I suggest adding 1/4 tsp salt.5 stars

  31. Katherine says:

This bread is absolutely delicious!! It’s going in the “saved” file immediately. Thank you ladies for all you do. It’s appreciated!5 stars

  32. Very moist, but not the best banana bread ever! Husband said it was good but not as good as my usual recipe.4 stars

    1. Okay.. I’m not real sure why you felt the need to share that. As you can see from the comments many people enjoy this banana bread and think its pretty amazing.

    2. When you make a recipe out of a cookbook, do you email the author and tell them your recipe is better? I mean…come on. Jeez!

  33. I’ve made this banana bread twice in a week. It’s the best! The swirl and the icing takes the flavor to a new level. Make it you won’t be sorry.5 stars

    1. We’re thrilled that you enjoy this recipe. We find it to be fantastic and we’re so happy you do too!

  34. Made this recipe without the cinnamon swirl had absolutely no taste

    1. This is hilarious! We all got a good laugh out of this one. Then you didn’t make the recipe, so please don’t complain that it didn’t have any flavor. When you leave out ingredients, you can’t expect it to be fabulous. This banana bread has fantastic reviews and if you had actually made it correctly then I think you would be suprised at the flavor. Better luck next time.

  35. This truly is the best banana bread! I’ll never make another recipe. It’s delish and perfect every time. Thank you Southern Lady Cooks, your recipes are the best on the internet.5 stars

  36. Just wondering.
Per your picture, the bananas don’t look “ripe” as most recipes call for (speckled brown spots, or skins completely brown=the sweetest banana flavor).
Do you use firm bananas? Never made anything with firm bananas that weren’t brown or speckled. I would think they have an under ripe taste.
    Thanks5 stars

    1. I make them with whatever I have on hand, it works with any level of ripeness.

  37. Made this several times. Can’t wait for it to come out of the oven!! So very good. Best recipe for banana bread ever!5 stars

  38. Leslie Allen says:

Thank you for this recipe! I’ll sound like a broken record based on previous reviews but this is the best banana nut bread I’ve ever made. Very moist (maybe the sour cream helps) & the swirl topping is a bonus. I didn’t make the drizzle since I didn’t feel that it needed it. I’ve actually gained so much confidence in making your recipes. Every one has been a hit!5 stars

    1. No, it calls for “1 stick butter or 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup” melted. All of those are the same amount.

  42. Awesome!

For 2 in the oven right now. Yum!!!5 stars

  48. Absolutely AMAZING. I’m not a huge banana bread person, nor am I a baker of any sorts, but this recipe has me baking banana breads to be proud of!! I’m making it for the second time in a week–usually I’m a recipe tweaker but this one is absolute perfection all on its own. 10/10!!!!5 stars

  57. Could I make this in smaller individual loaf pans? To hand out at a baking party?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I also didn’t have vanilla extract so I used bananas that were nice and over ripe for the extra sweetness! I also added a pinch of cinnamon to the glaze! I can’t wait to really sit don and eat this it looks, smells and tastes amazing! I am so ready for fall to be here!!! Thank you so much for this recipe!

Thank you so much Marsha. Happy you like the bread. Happy New Year to you and yours.

  87. Love this recipe. Got a question.. I’m going to freeze a few loads. How do I reheat it?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I would put it in the microwave or the oven.

  88. This was so good! I put the crumbles in the middle instead of on top and didn’t really swirl it …it left a pretty marble crunch yummyness in the middle.

  89. Barbara Dowell says:

Planning to make this immediately, but question first. Some recipies I’ve used in the past call for bananas to be a little soft–not like you would want to eat one by itself. Your recommendation please. (Love getting your emailed recipes!)

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I usually use bananas that are a little soft Barbara but not just mushy.

  95. Could I possibly use something besides sour cream and it still turn out? Where I live in Panama sour cream isn’t common or very cheap if found, but if it can be replaced with something else, I would love to try this! Thanks!

      1. Thank you! I will!

    1. I used plain Greek yogurt

  96. I’m just about to take this bread out if the oven !! It smells yummy!!!

  98. I have used a lot of your recipes and have enjoyed every one that I made. Next I will make this banana bread. Thank you so much for these great recipes.

  99. I tried a recipe I like where you cook the bananas in skins in oven 15 minutes @ 350 degrees until skins are black, scoop out the pulp & throw away the skins. Use 5 bananas per loaf of bread. Bumps up the flavor

  100. Carol Smith says:

Will this banana bread double? Some recipes don’t and I would like to be sure. Thanks so much, I love this site!!!!!
