This brown sugar meatloaf recipe has a sweet and sour flavor and my family loves it.

1 1/2 to 2 pounds ground beef
1 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked
1/2 cup green onions, chopped
1/3 cup green pepper, chopped
1/2 cup chopped celery
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke (Optional)
Several drops hot sauce
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 teaspoon salt or to taste
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce, divided (Save the other half for the sauce)
1 egg
1 tablespoon brown sugar.
Mix all the above ingredients together in a large bowl.  Shape into a loaf, place in casserole dish and bake uncovered in preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.
1/2 cup tomato sauce( the other half of the 8 ounce can)
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
Whisk sauce ingredients together in a bowl.  Remove meatloaf after 30 minutes and pour sauce over the top.  Raise oven temperature to 375 degrees and return meatloaf to oven.  Cook 35 more minutes.
Serve any leftover sauce in pan over individual meatloaf slices.  Enjoy!

  1. I make one similar to this but I use ritz crackers instead of oatmeal. So delicious

  2. I also do the brown sugar meatloaf, but I use ketchup, brown sugar and a very little mustard. I also put it on the meatloaf at the beginning of the cook time. My family loves it and won’t eat any other meat loaf but mine. I’m also a southern lady, but I was born in California. Being southern is the only way to go. Love your site!

  3. Stumbled upon and so glad I did, was planning on making meatloaf – will try your recipe along w/the corn pudding – will use my home canned corn!! Thanks (not often I find a recipe and I have all of the ingredients!!)

  4. What can I do if I don’t have a stove to get this great meal for my family?

  5. Oh goodness! My hubby LOVES meatloaf, but not necessarily mine :( . He’s always after me to find a new recipe and I’m thinking this one will suit him just fine. Thank you SO much!

  6. I’ll have to try this, been looking for a good meatloaf recipe!

  10. This sounds so good…I usually use a sweet BBQ sauce on top of my meatloaf, but I think I’m gonna give this one a try…Thanks for the recipe <3

  11. A good Meatloaf with mash taters is soo Good! But for me the Meatloaf Sandwich is the Best!!!

  12. That recipe put me in the mood to make meatloaf tonight. My recipe is somewhat similar, but I put cooked chopped spinach, cream cheese and mozzarella cheese in the middle…. sometimes bacon strips….YUM!!!!

  13. it’s dinner time with no plan on what to make and I’m looking at the picture and reading the recipe, trying very hard not to drool on my lap top! looks delicious

  14. I make my meatloaf the same way but for the sauce I use ketchup, brown sugar and Worcestershire Sauce. Mix together and spread on meatloaf 1/2 hour before done.

  15. Oh my mouth is watering…. I can’t tell you how much I miss meatloaf but sadly the rest of my family won’t eat it! Can you adopt me so I can enjoy some of this? lol!

    • I love meatloaf as well but it’s not one of my family’s favorites. But, I found that when I make any ground beef meal (hamburgers, sloppy joe’s, etc.) I can reserve what would amount to about 2 hamburger patties and made a “mini” meatloaf…have also used the full recipe, formed into “mini” loaves and frozen them for “whenever”!

      • One member of my family doesn’t like meat loaf, so I always separate enough meat out to make two burgers for him and make the rest into six small mounded mini meatloaves in a 12″ cast iron skillet to bake in the oven while I cook his burgers on the stove top. It only takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the meat loaves to cook when they’re so small, and I really like that they have more surface for the sauce (ketchup, barbecue sauce or this new brown sugar sauce I’m going to try next).

    • Hi Farmer’s Wife. Why not make yourself little individual meatloaves from this recipe, flash freeze and store? That way you can have a little mini meatloaf whenever you want and the rest of your family can have something else. :)

  22. I like that you use the oats, that is definately a healthy and frugal addition to stretch your meat budget!

  23. Sounds good and very similar to my recipe. I put the whole can of tomato sauce in the meat loaf though and use ketchup, brown sugar and dry mustard for the topping the last few minutes in the oven. So good!
