I made this cake yesterday for an early Father’s Day celebration. It’s is delicious! Several family members asked for the recipe. One of them isn’t a baker at all but I told her anyone could make this one. It’s simple, straightforward and now a favorite I’ll make over and over!
I made this twice. The first time it came out good. The second time something happened and the cake started rising through the icing. I don’t know why that happened but it still tasted great!
This is something I would like to try. My question is would the result be okay if I used a homemade cake mix instead of a box mix?
I believe you could!
Baking now, have made this many times, I use joy to spray pan with. It works great
Great recipe. Do I have to refrigerate it if using tonight?
I just keep it in a cool place, but yes you can.
Can I use margarine or butter to grease the pan? I don’t use spray. Thank you
Yes, that would be fine. 🙂
Does the butter need to be salted or unsalted butter?
We use whatever we have on hand, honestly we have never had it make a difference in this recipe.
Can you freeze the ooey gooey cake?
I havent tried it, but I would think you could.
Could you ad chocolate chips or say peach preserves in between layers
You can try to make it however you like, but I have never altered the recipe, so I cant say how it would turn out. We have a few ooey gooey recipes on the site if you want to see other versions.
The ooey gooey butter cake is AWESOME my family cannot get enough of this cake. Thanks for sharing.
You’re so welcome!! Glad you like this one!
Left overs need to be in the refrigerator because of the cream cheese?
We just keep it in a cool place. Cream cheese is okay to be out, people use cream cheese frosting all the time and leave the cake out.
I LOVE this recipe!! One time all I had was a chocolate cake mix. Let me tell you, it was SO good using it!!! From one southern cook to another, your recipes are so very good! Thank you for all the time you take to post them!! Have a great day 🙂
Thank you so much for the kind comment Angie! We love using different cake mixes! Have a wonderful day.
Do you bake the cake and then put on topping?
No.. you put on the topping and then bake the cake.

Do you use salted or unsalted butter?
I’ve used both and noticed no difference. Use whichever you prefer. Thanks!
Can someone tell me please, if doubling the recipe as suggested for a big gathering or holiday, what size pan, temperature and for how long in the oven?
I would use one of those silver disposable pans you can buy at any dollar store or any grocery store that are size 9 x 13. I meant you could double the amount of ingredients and use two pans. I don’t know if there is a larger pan than a 9 x 13 for cakes. You would still use the same temperature that way.
Can I use a smaller pan for the same recipe
I wouldn’t, but you can try it. The cooking time will be different if you do.
I can’t wait to try this. I was wondering what to make for Thanksgiving that would use up my supply of cream cheese and powdered sugar. Thanks!
Thank you! It’s so good! I think you’ll love it.
I love this recipe!
When I was little (long time ago. I am 68) my dad would bring home a Gooey Butter Cake from his favorite bakery. When I was older my sister found a recipe and we would make it for Daddy. We moved about two years ago, and I purged all my recipe collection. It was huge! I found that I could google a recipe and I was more limited for space in the new home.
My children loved when I would make this cake. I will surprise them at our next dinner!
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Char, for the lovely comment and story. I hope you enjoy the recipe with your children and have a great week ahead.
