  1. I made this cake yesterday for an early Father’s Day celebration. It’s is delicious! Several family members asked for the recipe. One of them isn’t a baker at all but I told her anyone could make this one. It’s simple, straightforward and now a favorite I’ll make over and over!5 stars

  2. Matt Beauchamp says:

I made this twice. The first time it came out good. The second time something happened and the cake started rising through the icing. I don’t know why that happened but it still tasted great!5 stars

  3. This is something I would like to try. My question is would the result be okay if I used a homemade cake mix instead of a box mix?5 stars

    1. You can try to make it however you like, but I have never altered the recipe, so I cant say how it would turn out. We have a few ooey gooey recipes on the site if you want to see other versions.

  10. Left overs need to be in the refrigerator because of the cream cheese?

    1. We just keep it in a cool place. Cream cheese is okay to be out, people use cream cheese frosting all the time and leave the cake out.

  12. Do you bake the cake and then put on topping?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

No.. you put on the topping and then bake the cake.

  13. Do you use salted or unsalted butter?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I’ve used both and noticed no difference. Use whichever you prefer. Thanks!

  14. Kimberley Powell Taylor says:

Can someone tell me please, if doubling the recipe as suggested for a big gathering or holiday, what size pan, temperature and for how long in the oven?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I would use one of those silver disposable pans you can buy at any dollar store or any grocery store that are size 9 x 13. I meant you could double the amount of ingredients and use two pans. I don’t know if there is a larger pan than a 9 x 13 for cakes. You would still use the same temperature that way.

      1. Can I use a smaller pan for the same recipe

      2. The Southern Lady says:

I wouldn’t, but you can try it. The cooking time will be different if you do.

  15. I can’t wait to try this. I was wondering what to make for Thanksgiving that would use up my supply of cream cheese and powdered sugar. Thanks!

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Thank you! It’s so good! I think you’ll love it.

  16. Char Harris says:

    I love this recipe!

When I was little (long time ago. I am 68) my dad would bring home a Gooey Butter Cake from his favorite bakery. When I was older my sister found a recipe and we would make it for Daddy. We moved about two years ago, and I purged all my recipe collection. It was huge! I found that I could google a recipe and I was more limited for space in the new home.

My children loved when I would make this cake. I will surprise them at our next dinner!

    Thank you for sharing!

    1. The Southern Lady says:
