This is a fabulous recipe. It was one the great grandmother made as a regular!! I add Ranch Style Beans and it gives it extra flavor…Thanks for posting this… I make it from memory so this is even better since I have found it “written”…..
Absolutely one of my favorite “comfort food” recipes!
This is one of my go to recipes! I’ve never had anyone not like it.
Thank you for the kind words. This casserole is definitely a hit with our family, too!
too bland, cannot recommend, will not make again
Hi Linda,
As you can see this recipe has many positive reviews. Not every recipe works for everyone. Thanks
This was AMAZING! Added 4 stalks of sliced celery to the last 5 minutes of the noodles. Kept everything the same. Will definitely be making again & sharing the recipe with my grown children!
First time trying. Just took it out of the oven and the first sample tastes awesome.
Just a heads up, the description says to cook uncovered but when you print the recipe it doesn’t say covered or uncovered. Glad I cooked uncovered and it’s perfect.
Thanks again. It’s a keeper.
could you do this in a slow cooker?
I’ve never made this recipe in a slow cooker so I can’t advise.
Do you think I could use cream of chicken soup? It’s all I have in my pantry
Yep!
This was very good. Next time I will add a little of taco seasoning or something to spice it up just a little. Will make this again for sure
Would you recommend a whole or half pack of taco seasoning??
I haven’t tried it yet with taco seasoning. Just used other spices
I don’t have garlic on hand, but I do have garlic powder. Can I substitute and how much would I use? Thanks.
yes, you can substitute and I would use the same amount of garlic powder.
This is my 3rd time making this! Its soooo good! Hubby doesn’t really like mushrooms, so I add a can of corn instead. (he doesn’t know I use cream of MUSHROOM soup in it too! lol) Definitely a keeper!
Wonderful! Way to be sneaky! We love this recipe too!
I added fresh spinach and used fresh mushrooms. I mixed everything together with the noodles before putting in oven. Dinner was fabulous!! Definitely will be making again
Wonderful! So glad it was a hit!
We just finished eating way too much of this, it’s really that good! I’m sharing this recipe with friends and family, and I told my husband this will go to his next work potluck because it’s a 10!
Wonderful! I am so glad you enjoyed it! We love this one too 🙂
Made this for dinner and from your directions it looked like layering meat sauce then noodles and cheese and repeat. But my noodles on top were all dried out, so I think next time I will just mix the whole thing together and put foil on top when I do the initial baking, and then remove the foil, top with cheese and put it in till the cheese melts. If the top noodles hadn’t been so crunchy I would have given it 4 stars.
I make a similar dish, except I cook it in a Dutch oven on top of stove..
after browning beef, onions, and seasonings, I then add uncooked noodles. I add a can of beef broth..or you can use a can of beefy mushroom soup..or both of these, depending on size of dish you need. I then add shredded cheese and mix all together. This is a go to dish here, and one I make at least once a month. ** you could empty it into a baking dish after it’s done on stove** baking at 350 for 15-30 minutes..adding more cheese on top.
Can’t wait to try this!! It’s ok to omit the mushrooms without altering any other ingredients right?
Should be fine. If you don’t want to use the cream of mushroom soup, someone left a comment saying cream of celery worked well. Enjoy!
This is a new family favorite!
Has anyone tried this with cream of bacon soup?
There’s a cream of bacon soup? I think that would be great! How can you go wrong with bacon?
Has anyone tried cooking this and then freezing some of it? I’m guessing it would be ok as I have done it with other casseroles but thought I’d ask. Thanks in advance!
I think it would freeze ok, Stephanie.
Thanks!
I was so excited to try this only change I did was fresh mushrooms… I did add last nites left over peas…
It seems really dry…. Advice?
Oh I did barely use Thyme.. not a fan of thyme..
I will have to try this again but it needs more moisture.
Thoughts on how I could have failed this recipie?
You could try adding a little more milk, Michelle, because you added extra ingredients they could have soaked up more of the liquid and you did use fresh mushrooms in the recipe. Hope this helps.
This is in the oven right now, and it smells good! I would like to make this as a meal for a meal train, but I feel like I should also include some kind of side? Any suggestions? All I can think of is a tossed salad. Thanks!
You could do this southern cabbage or a cabbage casserole. There is also a few recipes for roasted Brussels sprouts on the website. https://thesouthernladycooks.com/2016/12/29/southern-style-cabbage/
My family doesn’t do cream of anything soup nor do they like mushrooms. What can I use to substitute those ingredients?
Honestly Patty, I don’t really have any suggestions other than make your own condensed soup and use another kind other than mushroom. However they will all have cream in them.

It’s not this recipe, but I use kraft Mac and Cheese, with can of diced tomatoes and mix it with my browned hamburger/onions (drained first).
No creamed soup or mushrooms. Hope that helps.
What about a cheese soup?
The only cheese soup on the site is broccoli cheese soup, Sherry. If interested just type the name in the search box.

Do you use uncooked macaroni or cook it first before putting in oven?
Yes, it says to cook them before adding them to the mixture. Enjoy!
Hi, should this be baked covered or uncovered in the oven?
Hi Ashley, Sorry about that. I have updated the recipe to say uncovered. Thank you for asking. Have a great evening.
Made this tonight! I used Golden Mushroom soup and substituted 1/2 cup of beef broth for the milk. Also threw in some Velveeta as well. Delicious!

So glad you family loved it. Thank you so much for letting me know! Have a wonderful week.
Delicious! My family loved this. I had to make two changes. Oddly, I was out of macaroni, so used Spaghetti, broken in half. That worked very well. Also added two tablespoons sour cream. Next time I’ll make it 1/2 cup. Thanks for a good recipe! I found the 2qt casserole too small, so used the 3.5 qt.
So glad you enjoyed this recipe Vickie and thank you for letting us know. Have a great week ahead.
I just put this in the oven for our dinner tonight but in my rush to get it done I forgot to save the last of the cheese for after it is done and I out all the cheese on top of it. I hope it doesn’t burn!
Looks yummy. Do you have a print button so I can print the recipe. I don’t see one?
Yes Teresa, it’s at the very bottom of the post with the Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest Icons, its a green button.
Thank you for sharing! I made this tonight and it was absolutely delicious!

I tried this tonight also and it was fabulous, minus the mushrooms, which my family won’t eat. I used cheddar cheese inside and cheddar and mozzarella cheese on the top. I also served it with french green beans and buttered toast…..My family said it was a 10.
My mother made this casserole and I have continued with this recipe. We use egg noodles, green pepper, and cubed velveeta in the casserole and cheddar on top. I also just mix everything together instead of layering.
Hi there, I have all the ingredients to make this tonight for dinner except the cheese…..I have cream cheese, swiss and mozzarella, would one of those be a better substitute than the others to make this dish? Thank you for helping me out on such short notice.
I have only used the cheddar but I think I might use the swiss if I used another one of those threed, Melissa.
Thank you so much!
I’ve used mozzarella before also. I loved it
I was wondering if you could add Italian sausage or ground breakfast sausage to this?
This a great dinner idea we all, love it in, my family.
Gotta try this today it looks so good!
Made this tonight for dinner. Hubs and 3 teenage boys all gave it a thumbs up. I made a few changes based on what I had on hand. Very versatile recipe. Will definitely make it again.
Looks delicious. Do u use “uncooked” macaroni??
Yes.
Cook macaroni and set it aside.Do not bake it raw.
Thanks for quick response…the recipe stated uncooked macaroni and I had a doubt abt it.
You cook the macaroni according to directions on the package before adding to the hamburger.
Can I use cream of broccoli instead of mushroom? My family dose joy like them,
Yes, you can Gail.
can I freeze after layering.to heat and eat a few days later
Yes, I think you could, Debbie.I have never frozen it though.
will let ya know.Love your recipes.Have made quite a few all were fantastic. Thanks
You can freeze it, assemble and freeze, do not bake until you are ready to use it.
We’re having this tonight for dinner. Yum
This is very good.I have made this for years but I add a can of Rotel tomatoes too!!
Just made this last week! Family loved it. Next time we’re going to add either some shredded carrots or zucchini to hide some veggies! Delicious!
I was just wondering, could i substitute potatos for the macaroni. My family doesnt really like pasta.
Yes, I think you could do that Harry.
I made this tonight, and The Hubby loved it (with salsa of course). He even had seconds, and he never does that unless he really likes something. This one is going in my keeper book! Thanks!
This is delicious! Made it last night for dinner, along with apple cake(your recipe). YUM! Will definitely make this again!!
Just made this last night and YUM! I will definitely be making this again.
Definitely going to try this. Guess I WILL add both tomatoes and celery as we all enjoy them. Also can’t have too much cheese if you know what I
