CROCK POT PORK ROAST AND WHITE BEANS

Crock Pot Pork Roast and White Beans - The Southern Lady Cooks

Crock pot pork roast is an easy weeknight meal or make it anytime you want a great recipe for your family.  My family loves this easy dish. It’s honestly the perfect comfort food on a cold day. It’s so easy to prepare and the flavor is so good, something about the pork and the beans cooking together makes this dish wonderful!

Crock Pot Pork Roast Simple Ingredients Needed:

Pork roast

Great Northern white beans, dry not canned

Onion

Salt and Pepper

Minced garlic

I have never served this dish to anyone and they not love it, something about the simplicity of it makes people think it can’t be good, but let me tell you.. it is delicious! I do believe that fried cornbread is a must with this dish! If you have followed our site for any amount of time, you know cornbread is always a good idea!

  • You could use canned beans in this recipe but I would keep it on low heat so the beans don’t turn to mush on hot.
  • I love to top my bowl of beans with relish or chow chow! Both are delicious.
  • Leave the leftovers in the crock pot for easy cleanup, then just put the beans back on low or warm to heat them up!
  • You can use any type of pork roast you like. I’ve used center rib or center loin, and they both work great.
  • Please check the comments on this post to see how others have made this recipe.

“I’ve had this in my crock pot all day today. We just had dinner and oh my goodness…it was soooo good! The pork roast just fell apart. This is comfort food at its finest!!!” – Liz

  1. As I do not eat pork, I am wondering if this can be made with beef or chicken breasts?

    1. Chicken is fine, there is a white bean and chicken soup recipe on the website.

  2. Susan Lowe says:

I’m a HUGE fan of comfort food and, while is especially enjoyable in the fall and winter, I crave it year round! Because I don’t care to have the oven competing with the AC in the summer, I really appreciate recipes I can make in my crockpot- and this one did *not* disappoint. I followed the recipe as written, adding the optional onion, and just finished a wonderful bowl full of down home goodness. This is another of your crockpot recipes that will be going into my rotation, particularly when my grocery store has pork roasts on a BOGO free deal!5 stars

    1. YAY! So glad to hear this was a hit. It’s such a wonderful recipe and great comfort food!

  3. Man! I have loved all the recipes from The Southern Lady Cooks but this one was beyond bland when cooked as instructed. I am from South Louisiana and we love flavor in our food but this was so flavorless and required us to put heaps of seasoning on it after it was finished. I even put extra onion and garlic and it still came out bland. I was so looking forward to this as white beans and rice are my favorite. Sadly, this was a dud and a waste of a nice piece of pork. Still a fan of many other recipes but this one isn’t for anyone who loves flavor.

    1. Angee.. obviously this recipe isn’t for you, but as you can see from many of the comments this is a classic and stands the test of time. I have had many dishes I didn’t like, but many others did. That’s just cooking! Glad you found some others you like! 😉

  4. Lisa Rogers says:

Hi! What type of pork roast do you recommend? Bone in? Boneless? Thank you!5 stars

  5. Carolyn Higdon says:

Made your pork roast with white beans tonight I added ham broth to it. It was delicious! My husband said it reminded him of his Grandmothers cooking. I will be making this again. Thank you5 stars

  6. Marsha McTigue says:

Do you season the pork roast before you put it in the Crockpot?

  7. I thought it was bland and flavorless. Very disappointed and this isn’t my first rodeo. If you like flavorless food this is for you. I was misled by the positive review ratings. Usually positive reviews can be trusted. I felt people who offered any constructive criticism in their review comments were attacked.1 star

    1. Hi Bob,

As you can see, there are wonderful reviews on this dish and is very popular. My guess is that you simply don’t like soup beans and pork roast. Do you think the people that have commented on this post don’t really like it but are taking the time to say they do? Soup beans are a simple, traditional Southern comfort food that many people love for their hearty, humble flavors. They’re meant to be mild, allowing room for personal seasoning preferences. I encourage you to read the comments to see how other people enjoyed this dish. However, I’m sure you know, not every recipe is for everybody. Everyone has different tastes and likes, and that is what makes food wonderful. I think it’s probably safe to say that you are not a fan of this one and that’s perfectly fine. With over 1600 recipes on our website, I’m sure we have something here you will find to your liking. Thank so much!

  8. Anna Panco says:

Could this be made on stove top ?
I have 2 pork tenderloins I’d like to use in this recipe.
    Any thoughts ?

    Thank you 5 stars

    1. I have never made it on the stove top, I am sure you can, just have to cook it until the beans and pork are cooked through.

  9. Such a delish and simple and easy meal. I’ve made this pork roast and white beans several times. You won’t be disappointed.. It’s wonderful. Born and raised in Tennessee, it’s right up my alley. Thanks Southern Ladies.5 stars

  10. This is a great recipe and brings back memories of my Czech grandmother. If you want to “Czech” it up a bit, add some caraway seeds and marjoram, and serve it with fresh rye bread. So yummy and a great Fall dish.5 stars

  11. One of my favorite comfort foods. I would sear the pork roast on all sides before putting it in the crock pot. Great with hush puppies too. And sweet iced tea.5 stars

  12. I don’t know why I have never thought of doing this, before. I know it is going to be good.

  13. Linda Graham says:

I am not from the south and never having had this, I was wondering if you slice, cube, or shred the meat after it is cooked. Also, what do you serve it with?5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

We shred the meat after it is cooked and we don’t serve this dish with anything other than cornbread.

  14. Would the leftover freeze well?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Yes, you can easily freeze it.

  15. I KNOW this is amazing and I love beans and pork. However, I have a family member who can’t eat beans. I’m wondering if this could be made with just the pork! I know that’s sacrilegious! But it doesn’t look like the one who can’t eat beans could just scoop out some pork. I’ll make a second time for myself with the beans5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I think you could just make the pork, but you would need to add the water to keep it from drying out.

  16. I am making this tomorrow. Are there any vegetables you think might taste good to throw in the stew as well?5 stars

    1. I always put carrots in my beans.5 stars

  17. I believe it’d be better to cut up roast so it will cook faster. I did not and could shred the roast but beans overcooked. And 2# roast would be plenty. But the taste was very good.

  18. Keith Brown says:

I use Dried Lima Beans in mine…they keep their texture better than Great Northerns. I also add 2 coarsely-chopped onions in the mix.

    1. Ok Keith,I had that same idea but you didn’t say how it turned out with the limas.I bought a bag so I could try them in this dish.So how was it??5 stars

  19. When ever I cook a pork roast it seems so greasy. Is it the same in this recipe or does the starch if the beans help with that?

  20. Unfortunately I lost my grandmother at such a young age …16. I’m 52 now but i learned as much as possible from her in the 16 years I had with her. This recipe is so good and almost parallel with her recipe for soup beans and cornbread patties. She would sear her pork roast before slow cooking and added a little herbs (Italian spices, I believe and a bay leaf) and chicken broth but other than that hers was basically the same and oh so good! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful hearty southern meal and if I can stress anything to anyone …thankfully we have special people who share these recipes with us and thank you & please be nice to them! But if you are lucky enough to have your grandparents… spend time with them, listen and learn from them! They are the BEST life lessons and teachers! I miss mine every single day! Happy eating… mine are in my slow cooker as we speak. Yummmm….5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Thank you so much for sharing! You are right, grandparents are so precious!

  21. Georgeana says:

Delicious recipe and the house smelled so good all day! So easy, wish I’d found this recipe years ago. I did make mine with low sodium vegetable broth. Turned out great. This will definitely be part of our fall and winter rotation 5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Thank you for the kind comment! We’re so glad this was a hit for you!

  22. Christine says:

I made this a few days ago and it had no taste. Is there something missing from the recipe?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

There is nothing incorrect with this recipe. As you can see, there are wonderful reviews on this dish and is very popular. My guess is that you simply don’t like soup beans and pork roast. Not every recipe is for everybody. Everyone has different tastes and likes, and that is what makes food wonderful.

  23. This is the best comfort food! Soup beans and pork roast…it’s just the best. Thank you for reminding me about this classic again. It’s delicious!5 stars

  24. Christine says:

I’m making this tomorrow! What’s your thoughts on using a little low sodium chicken broth in with the water?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

      That would work fine!

    2. Hello. This sounds wonderful. Could i use pork chops instead? Maybe sear them first then add to the pot?

  25. It was so easy I (a man) was able to cook it.5 stars

  26. Marianne Spray says:

How do you make self rising cornmeal.
I have fresh ground cornmeal but I don’t understand how to make it self rising.
    Can you help?

  27. I have made this dinner numerous times. Each time I swear it’s better than the last. Such a comforting delicious meal. Thanks for your recipes. So good.

    1. The Southern Lady says:

You are very welcome!! I agree this is a great recipe.

  28. This is the best recipe! I found it on your site years ago and have made it many, many times. It’s fool proof! Simple and the best comfort food. Love your site!5 stars

  29. Kathi Giotta says:

Is it a boneless pork roast ? Looks like gravy in the bowl with small pieces of pork and beans but I see no directions beyond the cooking in the crockpot. Do the dry beans cook through 8hrs on low?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

The recipe clearly states to soak your beans overnight and then place them in the crockpot. I use a boneless pork roast but you can use what you like. The recipe is correct as written.

  30. Oh my!!! I grew up on cornbread crumbled in buttermilk, too. Yum!! It’s also good to add a bit of salt in your glass. My grandfather raised hogs, so we had cooked (“Soup Beans” we called them) and cornbread. Usually made with pinto beans and the best pork that my grandmother had canned. Thank you for your wonderful southern recipes.

  33. Finally, a lady that knows beans about pork and beans.5 stars

  34. What is best cut of pork roast to use in this recipe? And would a cast iron Dutch oven work in a low temp oven?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Honestly it’s whatever pork roast you like, center rib roast or center loin roast. I’m sure it would cook okay on a dutch oven on low temp.

  35. The Southern Lady says:

We don’t own an instapot, so I can’t say.

  36. The Southern Lady says:

I think it sounds great, give it a try!

  37. Do you think this could be made using canned beans?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

      Yes, that would easily work.

  38. The Southern Lady says:

I think you could use pork loin ok.

  39. The Southern Lady says:

I don’t know, I have only made it with beans. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!

    1. The Southern Lady says:

      Yes, they would Madeline.

      1. The Southern Lady says:

        Thank you! Enjoy!

  40. The Southern Lady says:

I have not tried it but see no reason why you couldn’t.

  41. Made this tonight and we loved it! I used navy beans instead of northern beans, added the garlic and salt and pepper but did not add the optional onion. I also added one tablespoon of sugar and added mashed potato flakes to thicken the water/ liquid. Hank you for the recipe! I look forward to reading all the recipes you post.5 stars

  42. The Southern Lady says:

No, I don’t use the same water I soak my beans in. Just enough to cover the beans.

  43. The Southern Lady says:

You can do it either way, Theresa. I don’t.

  44. ronda collins says:

Oh, I fixed this and me and my family loved it!!

  45. Sounds yummy and perfect now that our weather has turned cooler. It’s cooking in my crockpot at this very moment. I went with a lean pork butt roast so we’ll see how that turns out. I’ll be sure to share my results!

  46. I just made this for dinner. It was delicious! I like ham in beans, but it has too much sodium. This recipe solves that problem. I will make it again. Thank you!!!5 stars

  47. can you use a pork butt roast or is that too fatty?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Yes, I think you could and just cut some of the fat off before cooking.

  48. My husband loves lima beans. Would limas be a good substitution for the white beans?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Yes, you could do that, too.

    2. I made lima beans for my Dad last night. Came out awesome! No added salt just onion garlic lima beans and ham. Although I have used pork chops bc they are lean and not salted.
