SPICED APPLESAUCE BREAD

Spiced applesauce bread is so good and makes a great gift for the holidays or anytime you want to take food to someone.

I make this bread using my recipe for my Homemade Crock pot Applesauce. It is also wonderful with coffee or as a snack with milk.

Children and adults love this spiced applesauce bread.

1 1/2 cups applesauce (I use chunky applesauce in this recipe)

1 stick or 1/2 cup or 8 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1/2 cup buttermilk (could use regular milk)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup craisins (could use raisins and can add more if wanted)

1/2 to 1 cup nuts (I use walnuts)

Cream butter and brown sugar.  Add eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and applesauce. Mix with mixer.  Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and salt in a bowl. Mix well with wire whisk and add to liquid ingredients mixing together with mixer. Fold in craisins and nuts with a spoon.  Pour batter into a 9 x 5 bread pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray.  (I sprinkle a little brown sugar and a few nuts on top just to give it a little crunch). Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 55-60 minutes checking for doneness as ovens vary. Let cool about 10 minutes before removing from pan.  Makes 1 loaf. Enjoy!

  1. Sara Dodson says:

Could White House Chunky Applesauce be used?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

      You can always try it.

  2. Can you substitute whole wheat for the flour? Or at least 1/2 & 1/2?
    Thanks

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I have not made it with whole wheat Connie, but think you might try 1/2 and 1/2 and that would work.

  3. For a fun variation, simmer your raisins in a few tablespoons of rum or brandy (just until they plump) before adding them to your batter. 🙂5 stars

  4. deb graner says:

Have you used your crock pot applesauce in this recipe?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

It says on the recipe that I use my homemade applesauce in the recipe.

  5. Does it matter if I just use regular applesauce not chunky? I don’t make chunky applesauce.

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I always use the chunky but I think regular would be o.k. This is a very moist bread so you may have to cook it longer.
