HOMEMADE CROCK POT APPLESAUCE

Homemade Crock Pot Applesauce - The Southern Lady Cooks

This homemade crock pot applesauce is so much better than the store bought.  It is great in recipes for muffins, pancakes and cakes, too.  You can increase or decrease the spices to suit yourself. My family really enjoys making this a few times a year. Especially in the fall, we go to the orchard and buy a bunch of apples to make our own applesauce. It’s always fun to make fun traditions around food.

Homemade Crock Pot Applesauce Ingredients Needed

10 medium sized apples

Water

Brown sugar

Ground cinnamon

Ground nutmeg

Ground allspice

Cardamom

Honey

The great thing about this recipe is you can adjust the spices to your liking. I used Red Delicious apples to make this recipe, but you can probably use just about any kind of apple. We like our applesauce chunky however other people don’t so you can easily mash it up once it’s hot. Some people even take it out of the crockpot and run it through a blender. I don’t feel the need to do that since we don’t mind the delicious chunks of apple.

Servings 10 servings

Ingredients

  • 10 medium sized apples peeled and cored, cut up in pieces (I used Red Delicious for this one but you could use about any kind of apple)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  • Mix together water, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cardamom and honey with a wire whisk.
  • Pour over apples.
  • Cook on low for 7 to 8 hours or high 4 hours.

Notes

Will keep at least two weeks or longer in the fridge.
Makes about 1 1/2 quarts.
You can mash up the apples in the cooked sauce if you want to make it smoother. We like it chunky and I like the chunky better for using in recipes.

  1. Made it yesterday and it is devine! My apples must’ve been way to juicy though and along with the sauce it was too much liquid it wouldn’t thicken up. So I did something I rarely and thickened it a bit more with a little corn starch slurry. And I used ground ginger instead of cardamon cuz I didn’t have any. In my spice conversion chart it says that is the substitute for it.5 stars

Happy you like this applesauce and that is a good idea to thicken it a little if it needs it. Thanks for posting this so we know it can be thickened if need be.

      1. Or just a little less sauce…maybe as you go along add little bits. It took me a long time to peel em ( I used 12) and I put em in water like a potato not to brown but they did a little, didn’t affect the taste any. Maybe if I add a little lemon to the water, you think that will help?

      2. The Southern Lady says:

Yes, the lemon will keep it from turning brown but it doesn’t matter to me if it is brown or not.

      3. It didn’t to me either lol it wasn’t badly brown and there was no taste diff!
