❤️WHY WE LOVE THIS RECIPE

This bread is wonderful with coffee and it comes together pretty quickly. The swirl center really is delicious and it’s great to take to any gathering or give as a gift. If you have followed our site for any amount of time you know we love breads, especially easy ones. You can use any apples in this recipe, we use any red type of apple. We recently remade this and used cosmic apples.

SWAPS

Someone always asks if they can use milk instead of buttermilk. I’m sure you can but it will change the fat content of the recipe. Even if you use a buttermilk substitute, it won’t have the same fat content. I do think it will work just fine with whole milk. If you are not a fan of the raisins, simply leave them out. It won’t hurt the recipe if you do. We love this made with pecans but you can easily use walnuts too, or no nuts at all.

  • This bread is unbelievably good.

I cook a lot but don’t normally review, but on this one I couldn’t help myself – I had to review. It makes a pretty loaf. I could have eaten the whole loaf. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐TIP

Always cut quick breads with a serrated knife and cook on the middle oven shelf for best results. This is also good warm with a cup of coffee. You don’t have to add the glaze if you don’t want too.

OTHER DELICIOUS BREAD RECIPES

  • Cinnamon Bread – This is a very popular bread made with cinnamon chips. We love this one!
  • Hobo Bread – This is an old fashioned bread that still stand today. It’s made without eggs and it’s super versatile.
  • Sourdough Bread and Starter – This sourdough starter is made with potato flakes and super so good!
  • Molasses Oat Bread – So good right out of the oven with butter and honey!

STORING, REHEATING & SERVING SIZE

We wrap this in aluminum foil or put it in a bread container. We heat a slice in the microwave if we want it warm. It makes one loaf about 6-8 servings.

  1. I’ve got some dried apples – would I be able to use those instead of fresh apples?5 stars

    1. You can always try it Judy, we have never made it that way so I can’t say.

  2. Hello,
The recipe calls for 2 cups shredded apples how many apples (average sized) would I need to make the 2 cups. Thank you for your help.

  3. Donna Boyling says:

Can you switch buttermilk with plain full fat yogurt?

  4. I have been baking for 50 yrs so my results can’t be from inexperience. All that topping(total of 2 1/2 cups of ingredients) poured onto top of 9×5 size loaf pan and swirled?? Most of it remained on top. The many raisins cooked into rocks and the nuts were so deep they fell off after baking. After buying sour cream, apples, nuts and buttermilk especially for this recipe it became a very expensive failure. Even tried eating the cake part and removing topping, but with only 1/2 cp of sugar it wasn’t sweet at all. Definitely a throw away!!2 stars

    1. Hi Pat, gosh I wonder where it went wrong for you? If you read the comments, you’ll see that many people love this recipe and have never had any issues preparinng it. This is a very simple quick bread to prepare and shouldn’t have been difficult for you. It seems maybe you didn’t read the directions properly? The topping is not swirled in to the bread, the SWIRL is. If it remained on top for you, my guess is you didn’t swirl it properly. Maybe that is where it went sideways for you? In my many years of baking/cooking experience I’ve come to learn that not everyone can make every recipe. That is what makes cooking and baking fun, sometimes it’s simple and other times it’s challenging! 😉 Better luck next time!

    2. After reading your comment I figured with my baking experience maybe I should try it as well. Something must have gone wrong on your end because my bread came out wonderful. I had no issues and we all loved it. This is a true example of you can’t go by comments. I’m glad I tried it!5 stars

      1. Thrilled it worked for you! Glad you decided to give it at try, this recipe has always been a hit for us and we love it.

  5. Jan Hamil says:

Love it! I made this last fall several times and I am about to make it again. Moist, flavorful, just delicious!5 stars

  6. So moist & delicious!!! What a fantastic recipe! I came across another one of your recipes on FB and I needed to make something with all the apples I picked this week. WOW. Foolproof.
I used Honeycrisp Apples which are my favorite. But I was surprised that I couldn’t taste the apple flavor very well. Wonder if I could substitute the buttermilk for apple cider? Or does that play a significant part in the bread’s structure? I would love to hear your thoughts! Thank you!5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I would not take the buttermilk out of this bread. The buttermilk definitely contributes to the texture of the bread. My guess is that your apples didn’t have a strong flavor so maybe try a different type of apple next time. Thanks!

  7. Can you use almond flour. Can’t have regular.

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I’ve never made this with almond flour so I can’t advise. Thanks!

  8. Loved it! Made several times.

Question…. is this adaptable to muffins?5 stars

  9. Thank you for this quick, easy, delicious dessert!
I was mixing this tired and accidentally put in too much buttermilk. Luckily, because I reread the instructions I was able to pour some out before I mixed the batter. I didn’t have a pan big enough to double the recipe. I also used the additional buttermilk as a substitute for the sour cream (I only had 2 tbsp of sour cream. I was tired so I just cubed the apples instead of shredding them. Still tasted good! It was crispy on the sides and edges and I had to take it out of the oven at 55 minutes.
    This recipe is tired-proof! Haha.
I’m going to look for more apple recipes because I live in Washington and they’re always around.

    Thanks again!5 stars

Yes, I have used both at this temperature.

  15. Hi. I don’t buy buttermilk since nobody cares for it. Is there anything else I can use for substitute in Apple Pie Bread.

  16. Try Lactaid and put a little vinegar in it to sour. I don’t know if it will work or not, but I’d try it before mixing any of the other ingredients together.

  17. This bread is unbelievably good. I cook a lot but don’t normally review, but on this one I couldn’t help myself – I had to review. It makes a pretty loaf. I could have eaten the whole loaf.5 stars
