Honey Bun Cake
Ingredients
- 1 box yellow cake mix without the pudding in the mix
- 12 tablespoon butter or 1 1/2 sticks melted
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 cup pecan or walnut pieces
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Cooking spray for pan
Topping or Icing
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 4 or 5 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Combine yellow cake mix, melted butter, eggs, buttermilk and almond extract and mix with mixer. Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish and pour in the cake batter. Combine nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle on top of cake batter and swirl into cake batter. (I just use a knife and kind of swirl it throughout the batter) Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes. Let cake cool.
Topping Instructions
- Mix together topping ingredients. (You can add more or less milk to the powdered sugar until you get the consistency you like for pouring) Pour or drizzle over cake.

I made this a few days ago for a family gathering. It was a delicious hit. I kept sneaking bites. I endorse this recipe for ease of making and a delicious final product.
Thank you great recipes
I’m having a hard time finding out which cake mix brand has a cake mix with no pudding. They all seem to say “super moist, “perfectly moist”, “moist deluxe”, or “moist supreme”, which according to Google indicates there’s probably pudding in the mix. Google also suggested reading the ingredient list to see if there is pudding in it, but it’s all chemical wording and I don’t have a degree in food science. This recipe looks delicious and I’d really like it to be successful. Which brands have no pudding? Thanks!
it will say “pudding in the mix” on the box.. if it doesnt say that, it’s the one you want. Most regular cake mixes don’t have “pudding in the mix” this is a picture one that does: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Betty-Crocker-Delights-Super-Moist-French-Vanilla-Flavored-Cake-Mix-13-25-oz/2796773149?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=102624282&sourceid=dsn_ad_34ba2672-106a-484b-a996-41cf96423ae3&veh=dsn&wmlspartner=dsn_ad_34ba2672-106a-484b-a996-41cf96423ae3&cn=FY26-MP-PMax-P13N_cnv_dps_dsn_dis_ad_mp_s_n&gclsrc=aw.ds&wl9=pla&wl11=online&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22437915517&gbraid=0AAAAADmfBIrPr_Ldsw_aK6F8PJxDnjvVf&gclid=Cj0KCQjw5onGBhDeARIsAFK6QJah91ZErqE6hq9UNU-bjBpBtXL4v1qlz69JMEV_tgim-Qu7b-3pbyoaAmTJEALw_wcB
Hi…can you substitute the almond extract for vanilla, or would that change the flavor profile too much? Thank you
You can absolutely do that! I think it will change the flavor a little but it should still be delicious.
I made this for Tea time today…..My husband cannot stop saying how amazing this cake is! Reading the ingredients I couldn’t quite picture the honey bun flavor….. but it is absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!
YAY! I am so glad you enjoyed it!
I love most of your recipes please don’t stop putting your recipes on Facebook. Keep up the amazing work!!!!!!
Thank you Glenda for the very kind comment. We are thrilled you are enjoying them.
So delicious, so quick and easy. My house smelled like a honey bun factory while it was baking! This is wonderful with a cold glass of milk or coffee. I used the sugar free cake mix and the Swerve brown sugar, and it was wonderful! My husband loves it!
Made this today. Very good! Will make again.
A most PERFECT wonderful cake! I served it hot…out of the oven…with a huge dollop of whipped cream. Also, I poked holes in the cake with the handle end of a wooden spoon to allow the glaze to incorporate into the cake. I love this so much!!!
Wonderful!! We’re so glad it was a hit for you. This is definitely one of our favorites!
Finally a honey bun cake recipe with butter…..not nasty oil!! Thanks!!!
I browned the butter first….it was AMAZING!! Great recipe!
A creative & delicious take on a classic snack!
If I can’t find yellow cake mix with pudding can I use the cake mix and add a small package of vanilla pudding mix to it?
This recipe is for a cake mix WITHOUT the pudding. Per the recipe “1 box yellow cake mix without the pudding in the mix”
Can you use plain milk or sour cream
I think plain milk would work okay.
This cake is not mushy but a very light cake. Probably the reason for the 4 eggs.
Was this developed with the old 18.25 size cake mix or is this the newer 15.25 oz cake mix?
I just made one at Christmas, with the cake mix size they offer now.
My husband and I have made this many time over the years and it is always a hit.
Isn’t it wonderful?! We love it too.
Does it work in a bunt pan?
I have never tried it in a bundt pan because it is just so easy in a 9 x 13 but I see no reason why it would not work, Jeanette.
It did. Although the amount of glaze was way too much for a Bundt, imo. Good cake, though.
Yes.. this glaze is for a 9X13.. as you can see.
OMG just made this cake, we ate it warm, this is so yummy!!!
If u don’t have yellow cake mix , can we use the regular flour & baking powder
I have not tried it that way Beena, but I see no reason why you couldn’t. Should work for you.
Made this today for breakfast – yummm!
Quick question, tho – I am above 6000 feet, and it fell in the middle. Do you have a high-altitude version?
Thank you!
Sorry, I don’t Rebecca.
Honey bun cake recipe awesome
Has anyone tried it in a bundt pan? Baking time?
I divided the recipe in half and poured into two 8″ square cake pans – and it was absolutely incredible! Rave reviews all around. Going to make it again. And again. And again.
So happy you enjoyed this recipe, Maria, and thank you for letting me know. I can’t make this cake very often because it is my very favorite and I want to eat the whole cake by myself. lol.
I have made this a few times and it’s really an awesome coffee cake, always disappears quickly,Thank You so much for sharing!
Yummy but sweet, sweet, SWEET!
I finally made this! I’ve had it on my mind since you posted it the other day!
Mine didn’t turn out as pretty as yours Judy – seemed like too much brown sugar or something so in addition to swirling it into the cake in the pan there was quite abut left on top – which didn’t taste bad but just wasn’t perfect looking like yours.
Have you tried this in a loaf pan – layering the cinnamon brown sugar and nuts with the batter? I thought it might work that way. This will definitely be a keeper in my recipe files!
Sounds like you need to do a little more swirling, Mischelle, to get it all worked into the cake mixture. I have not tried it in a loaf pan nor have I tried layering it. I am sure you could easily layer it if you don’t like the swirls. We love this cake.
This cake is awesome, we have made it 3 times in one week. Oh did I forget to tell you it is the easiest cake to make, that I have ever made and I have made a lot of cakes.
I have made it twice in 2 weeks, Shirley. We can’t get enough of it either. Thank you for your comment. Happy you like the cake.
I’m getting new neighbors this week, so I think I’ll make this for their welcome basket. Might as well start off a new friendship with something this good.
I’ve made Honey Bun cake before, and it was delicious! Yours has a few different ingredients though that I think sound wonderful! I love anything with buttermilk and almond! Thanks, must try this soon!
I’ll be making two of these today. One for my neighbour and one for me!
They are wonderful Jim and addictive! I can’t get enough of this cake. Enjoy!
Hello this sounds delightful, but the thing is we don’t get boxed yellow cake here in Scotland, so I was wondering if you have a recipe for the cake part?
Hello Clare, I do have a recipe for that cake. I’ll send it to you later when I’m home from work. Thanks so much for coming to visit today!
