This Black Midnight Cake is easy to make and tastes wonderful. You can use your favorite frosting or just sprinkle with powdered sugar. It would be a good cake to decorate for Halloween. If you like chocolate, you will love this cake.

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup 100% cocoa (You can use dark chocolate cocoa if you want this really black)
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup butter or 12 tablespoons, softened
2 eggs
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup black coffee
1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt and baking in a bowl. Set aside. Cream the sugar, butter and eggs in a large bowl using mixer. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture along with water, coffee and vanilla extract. Mix with mixer. Spray a 9 x 13 baking pan with cooking spray, add cake batter and bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes until center tests done. Makes 1 cake. You can add the glaze below or frost with your favorite frosting. Enjoy


1 cup powdered sugar
2 to 3 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract, (optional)
Mix together with wire whisk and sprinkle over cooled cake.

  1. Can the black midnight cake be modified using gluten free flour?
    I simply love this cake. Except I have always made a b a vanilla butter cream icing.

    Could I transfer this to a round cake? How would I do it?

      I have not tried it in a round pan but I would just divide the batter in half and cook in 2 round pans. I would maybe cook 10 minutes less time and check centers to make sure they are done.
