Chocolate Applesauce Brownies - The Southern Lady Cooks

Serve them with coffee as dessert or have one with milk anytime for a snack. They are wonderful with a scoop of ice cream and great to make hot fudge cakes. I am always looking for something to do with one cup of applesauce I have left in the refrigerator and this is a way to use it up.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup 100% cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 stick or 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1 cup white granulated sugar
1 cup applesauce
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped nuts, pecans or walnuts, (optional)

In a large bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a smaller bowl melt the butter and chocolate chips together in the microwave or on top of the stove. I do mine in the microwave and it takes about one minute. Remove and stir the butter and chips till smooth, then add the applesauce, vanilla and sugar, and combine with the flour mixture. Stir in the eggs and nuts. Spray a 9 x 9 baking dish. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes until center tests done. Makes about 9 servings. Enjoy!

Do you use unsweetened or sweetened applesauce?

If using salted butter how much salt should I use? Please remove the comment with the typo.

  3. I made thes e brownies and they were delicious. however I found them a bit crumbled. But no one complained they went so fast. Thank you5 stars

  4. I don’t see where to add the vanilla! But I always check the list of ingredients to make sure I’ve added everything but these are delicious though! I always make two batches one with walnuts and one without.

  5. I made these delicious brownies today. I have one suggestion though. If a person is not a seasoned baker ( lol), they will find it confusing to see the sugar and vanilla in the list of ingredients but not in directions. Pretty easy to figure out, just sayin.
These are wonderfully moist. I added walnuts and I can’t wait to make that cup of coffee to enjoy with my second piece.
