CHOCOLATE APPLESAUCE BROWNIES

Chocolate Applesauce Brownies - The Southern Lady Cooks

These chocolate applesauce brownies are so good and easy to make. Serve them with coffee as dessert or have one with milk anytime for a snack. They are wonderful with a scoop of ice cream and great to make hot fudge cakes. I am always looking for something to do with one cup of applesauce I have left in the refrigerator and this is a way to use it up.

Chocolate Applesauce Brownies Ingredients Needed:

All-purpose flour

100% cocoa

Baking powder

Baking soda

Salt

Butter

Chocolate chips

White granulated sugar

Applesauce

Eggs

Vanilla extract

Chopped nuts, pecans or walnuts, (optional)

We love these brownies because the applesauce make them very moist. You can top these with powdered sugar or leave it off. These are made in an 9X9 so it doesn’t make a huge pan of brownies. Perfect for a small occasion! Sometimes you just want a smaller dessert.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup 100% cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick or 8 tablespoons or 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts pecans or walnuts, (optional)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. In a smaller bowl melt the butter and chocolate chips together in the microwave or on top of the stove. I do mine in the microwave and it takes about one minute.
  • Remove and stir the butter and chips till smooth, then add the applesauce, vanilla and combine with the flour mixture. Stir in the eggs and nuts. Spray a 9 x 9 baking dish. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 40 to 45 minutes until center tests done.

  1. They were delicious! I added 1/2 tsp of butter extract, chopped pecans and substituted the applesauce for 2 fresh medium sized apples (blended of course) Thanks for sharing, looking forward to more of your recipes! 5 stars

  2. Elizabeth says:

  3. The Southern Lady says:

Where does it say that.. I don’t see one place on the recipe where I stated that anywhere..

  4. Georgia Roberson says:

I almost forgot the sugar because it was not in the instructions! I only added 1/3 cup of sugar because I thought that 1 cup of sugar was going to be too much with the applesauce. For me it was perfect. Brownies were so moist and delicious!! I will make them again!

  5. Fina Zarzar says:

Do you use unsweetened or sweetened applesauce?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

It really doesnt matter, whichever you prefer. Sweetened will make the brownies sweeter.

  6. Fina Zarzar says:

If using salted butter how much salt should I use? Please remove the comment with the typo.

    1. The Southern Lady says:

If you use salted butter, then don’t add any salt to the recipe.

  7. I made thes e brownies and they were delicious. however I found them a bit crumbled. But no one complained they went so fast. Thank you5 stars

  8. I don’t see where to add the vanilla! But I always check the list of ingredients to make sure I’ve added everything but these are delicious though! I always make two batches one with walnuts and one without.

  9. I made these delicious brownies today. I have one suggestion though. If a person is not a seasoned baker ( lol), they will find it confusing to see the sugar and vanilla in the list of ingredients but not in directions. Pretty easy to figure out, just sayin.
These are wonderfully moist. I added walnuts and I can’t wait to make that cup of coffee to enjoy with my second piece.
    Thank you for sharing.
