BAKED SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

Baked Sweet Potato Casserole - The Southern Lady Cooks

This baked sweet potato casserole is my favorite. Wonderful side dish for Thanksgiving or Christmas but we love this anytime. It’s a super easy dish to make, doesn’t have a lot of ingredients and is a delicious dish! You may also love this great Mashed Potato Casserole, it’s another popular recipe.

Ingredients Needed for Baked Sweet Potato Casserole:

Large sweet potatoes, cooked and peeled (I boil mine. You could also use canned sweet potatoes, drained. Two of the tall 40-ounce cans, but I think the fresh sweet potatoes are best)

Butter

Heavy cream (could use evaporated milk or regular milk)

Brown sugar

Egg

Vanilla extract

Ground cinnamon

Nutmeg

Chopped (Walnuts or pecans)

Marshmallows (optional)

Recipe Notes: I used a 2 quart casserole dish for this recipe. This dish reheats well in the microwave or oven and could be put together the night before. Just add the nuts and marshmallows when cooked the next day. I’ve also made this in a 7X11 dish. Just whatever everything will fit in!

Recipe Comments: “I made this last week for Thanksgiving and HANDS DOWN best sweet potatoes EVER….. the family fell in love…. I have referred your page to soooo many people!”-Krisitie

“Saw this and tried it for the first time on Turkey Day. My family was not happy with my idea of trying this recipe instead. However, they are now converts and have insisted this casserole be our new, official holiday sweet potato recipe. .and I agree with them 100%! It is phenomenal!”-Lori

Ingredients

  • 4 medium to large sweet potatoes cooked and peeled (I boil mine. You could also use canned sweet potatoes, drained. Two of the tall 40 ounce cans, but I think the uncanned are best)
  • 1 stick butter or 1/2 cup or 8 tablespoons
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream could use evaporated milk or regular milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon Can use more of the spices if you like. I like to taste the sweet potatoes
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup nuts chopped (Walnuts or pecans)
  • Marshmallows Optional

Instructions

  • Cook and peel sweet potatoes and mash with potato masher.
  • Add butter and cream to potatoes just like if mashing regular potatoes. Stir in brown sugar, egg, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray.
  • Put mashed sweet potatoes in dish and sprinkle nuts over the top. Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and add enough marshmallows to cover top of baking dish. Can use the miniature or big marshmallows. Put back in oven until marshmallows start to melt and brown on top. (I just stick mine under the broiler for a few minutes.)

Notes

I used a 7 x 11 casserole dish for this recipe.  Reheats well in the microwave or oven. This dish could be put together the night before without the nuts and marshmallows and cooked the next day.

  1. Thank you for sharing this recipe; it is *very* similar to the one my precious Mother used to make at Thanksgiving. She put a little bit of orange juice and a small amount of evaporated milk in hers; however, I don’t know the amounts & sadly, neither my sister or myself ever got her recipe before she passed. I have searched the internet extensively for it and yours is the closest I have come.5 stars

    1. I am glad you found this recipe and wish it was exactly like the one you are looking for but glad it is similar!

  2. Making your sweet pot casserole for thanksgiving I know it will be great5 stars

  3. Carey Eule says:

This is my family’s all time fav sweet potato casserole recipe. We have it as a side on holidays and even have it as a dessert during the winter months! Love you Southern Lady!5 stars

    1. YAY!! We’re so thrilled you enjoy it. Thank you so much for the kind comment! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  4. Alison Lindley says:

How many will this recipe feed? I didn’t see that info! Thank you!!

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I would think around 6-8 servings depending on how big of portions you serve. Thanks!

  5. Thank you so much for this wonderful recipe! How long do you boil the potatoes for?5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I can’t answer that; that would completely depend on the size of your sweet potatoes. You want to cook them till they are tender.

  6. Anne and/or Leigh, have you ever added bourbon to your sweet potato casserole? It really is delicious and just adds another flavor!! I am so glad I found your website! I never did take the opportunity to pick my Mother’s brain for her recipes which are exactly like yours! I am beyond thrilled to have found your site!!! I cannot wait to get your emails every day!!!!5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

      Hi Dana!

We have not added bourbon, but I bet that is so good. We’re thrilled you found us and are enjoying our website. Thank you so much for the kind words!

  7. Delicious! We’re not from the US, so this was a totally new combination for us, but we loved it.

    1. The Southern Lady says:

      So glad you enjoyed it!

  8. Do you preferred to cover the baking dishes when they’re in the oven, or leave the cover off?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

We leave the cover off when we make this dish.

  9. I have been looking for a recipe like this that my mom and grandma used to make and this looks closer than any except the egg. I’m curious, what role does the egg play? Would it work without the egg?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

The egg just helps to hold it together. I think you could leave it out, Deb.

  10. I made this dish for thanksgiving, but where your recipe shows yams I used sweet potatoes. I would cut back on the brown sugar and vanilla due to the natural sweetness of the potatoes. Making it again for Christmas.

  11. Add A can of drained crushed pineapple:)

  12. This is a great recipe! Try adding cooked apples to the recipe, they will love it.

  13. These were really delicious, but I would caution everyone to keep an eye on those marshmallows in the broiler. Ours caught fire. And, while some prefer fire-blackened marshmallows, they ended up deformed because of how they are arranged in the pan, so when the fire died down, there was a field of 3″ tall black stalagmites on the dish. I sawed the burnt tops off with a knife and everything underneath was just fine–and some of our guests actually came into the kitchen and took the blackened marshmallows anyway. So, I wanted you to know that this dish is absolutely delicious, even if you accidentally light it on fire.5 stars

  14. i made this last week for thanksgiving and HANDS DOWN best sweet potatoes EVER….. the family fell in love…. i have referred your page to soooo many people5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Thank you so much Kristie. So happy your family enjoyed this recipe and thank you for sharing the page, too.

  15. Sweet potatoes are the best part of holiday meals for my family. I’ve been making the same sweet potato recipe for years. .sliced in half and baked in a syrup with marshmallows on top. Saw this and tried it for the first time on Turkey Day. My family was not happy with my idea of trying this recipe instead. However, they are now converts and have insisted this casserole be our new, official holiday sweet potato recipe. .and I agree with them 100%! It is phenomenal! Due to allergies, I left out the nuts, but it didn’t seem to matter. And the aroma while its in the oven gave my turkey a run for the money. .lol Thank you for sharing this recipe! !5 stars

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Thank you so much Lori. So happy to hear your family liked this recipe. Have a wonderful holiday season.

  16. in MN ‘sweet potatoes’ are a beige color – ‘yams’ are a dark orange color and what people commonly call as sweet potatoes. There are too many varieties these days! Confusing to people.

  17. Love your page and recipes they’re Great Thank You for sharing them. God Bless !!

  18. Will be short on oven space. Can I use a crock pot that has about a12 inch oblong opening and then remove it from the base and add marshmallows and broil. If so, what temp and for how long?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I have never done it in the crockpot. I have no idea.

      1. jan mincks says:

I was wondering this too, because of oven space so I think I’m going to bake mine in the crock pot in the oven the night before or early morning hour and then transfer it from oven to crockpot outer warmer and just keep on warm setting, might have to try it before Thanksgiving so I don’t have a unwanted surprise

  19. Jeanette Carver says:

    this looks good 🙂

  26. Christina says:

I’ve never boiled sweet potatoes. What’s the best way to do this? Skin on or off? Whole or cut up? This sounds delicious.

    1. The Southern Lady says:

Skin on and whole just like you would boil a regular potato.

    2. You can do them just like regular potatoes, pealed and sliced.

  27. JoAnn Masterjohn says:

Got a question for you. What do you consider sweet potatoes? My daughter moved to Tennessee and all she can find is yams. When I went to visit…all I found was yams. I send her sweet potatoes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year, I’m sending her the seeds so she can grow her own. Why can’t she find sweet potatoes in TN? Do you consider the redder potato the sweet potato down there? I don’t get it…
Love your recipes though. I dearly want to try this one.

    1. Yams and sweet potatoes are same thing.Yams is label in cans and it’s sweet potatoes. We have a lot of sweet potatoes here in South and selling cheap.

    2. KKBALDRIDGE says:

I live in Nashville, TN (I am a native) and just bought sweet potatoes at Kroger for .39 per pound. I baked them in the microwave, shelled them, and made this casserole. Delicious!

    3. I’m from Tn. Sweet potatoes and yams are the same . When you buy then in cans they are called yams, but they are sweet potatoes. Don’t ask me why. Call the company that sell the canned yams.LOL Happy Thanksgivinh to all.
