HOMEMADE PIE CRUSTS

Homemade pie crusts are easy to make.

This recipe for homemade pie crust makes 4 pie crusts.  I usually make four at a time.  They will keep in the refrigerator for several days and stay soft.  I use them for pies, quiche and pot pies.  You could also freeze the dough and use it at another time.  Make your own hand pies using this recipe, too.  My family loves cobblers and they are great for topping cobblers in a casserole dish.  We get great reviews on these homemade pie crusts.

Ingredients for Homemade Pie Crust

4 cups all purpose flour

1 tablespoon sugar

1 3/4 cups shortening

1 tablespoon vinegar

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 egg (beaten)

1/2 cup water

Instructions for Homemade Pie Crust

Blend flour, sugar and salt.   Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.  Mix together egg, vinegar and water.  Add to flour mixture.  Make into round balls and chill before rolling out on a floured surface.

I have always believed it is best to know how to make something from scratch. Even if you don’t use the recipe every time you need a pie crust, you always have the option if needed.
