Here you will find The Southern Lady Cooks monthly reading list! We love to read! If you’re signed up for our enewsletters then you know that we talk about the books we are currently reading from time to time. We decided that on the first of every month we’re going to do a short entry on what books we are enjoying.

February Book:

Natchez Burning by Greg Iles-This is the first book in the Natchez Burning Trilogy

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes the first novel in his Natchez Burning trilogy—which also includes The Bone Tree and Mississippi Blood—an epic trilogy that interweaves crimes, lies, and secrets past and present in a mesmerizing thriller featuring Southern lawyer and former prosecutor Penn Cage.

Raised in the southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering the African American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Once a crusading prosecutor, Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses even to speak in his own defense.

Mom and I are both reading this book. I bought her the set for Christmas because I was so into the book, I wanted her to read it, too! This mystery has definitely kept us intrigued, it’s super hard to put down.  Which is the best kind of book, right? If you like reading about the south, history and mystery, pick it up, this book is for you! I would, also, highly suggest reading this book while enjoying some of my  Grandmother’s (Mississippi native) amazing Pound Cake. It’s heavenly!

March Book:

The Bone Tree by Greg Iles-This is the second book in this trilogy and picks up where the first one left off. Actually I was quite surprised because its been my experience that a lot of sequels start off years later from the first one. However, this one starts exactly where the first book, Natchez Burning ends. I love that he wrote it this way. If you love the South and love reading about it, I can’t recommend these books enough. Mr. Iles is such an eloquent writer that really transcends you to the deep south. Every time I pick up his books, I feel like they are taking me on a field trip. One note I want to share is that these books are 700-900 pages, so just know you may not finish them in a couple of days.

If you are reading this trilogy please let us know if you are enjoying it as much as we are! Since St. Patrick’s Day is this month, I would suggest making some of these wonderful Lucky Charm Treats and enjoying them while curled up reading this book.

April Book:

If you like Football you will love this book, however even if you aren’t a huge football fan you will still enjoy learning about Lou Holtz life. He tells a great story and will keep you engaged in the book.
