Bread crumbs are so easy to make and have on hand for breading chops, chicken or any kind of meat. They are good for topping off casseroles, too.
Bread crumbs are great on chicken fingers and in meatloaf. Homemade bread crumbs taste better and they are cheap. It’s a great way to use up old bread and you know what they have in them! You can use any kind of bread like white, whole wheat, sourdough, rye or even leftover cornbread, hot dog and hamburger buns. You can combine several different breads.
How to make bread crumbs at home.
Spread bread on a baking sheet and heat in a 300 degree oven for about 20 minutes. Turn bread over at 10 minutes. Remove and let cool. Tear or break into small pieces. You can put in food processor, blender, or you can use a plastic bag and a rolling-pin. I have even used my coffee grinder if I am in a hurry.
Bread crumbs can be stored in the refrigerator for about a week or frozen in an air tight container for up to six months.
I do not season the crumbs until I am ready to use them.
You can add any number of dried spices such as basil, Italian seasoning, oregano or fresh spices as well. Salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder works good, too. Use your imagination and experiment.
I never throw away bread of any kind but use it to make my own bread crumbs.
