HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN BAKING POWDER
Make your own baking powder is a handy tip to know. This is a substitute to use in recipes if you run out. You can double and have it on hand for when needed. You will be able to “share” these by looking under the photo and clicking on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest to share with your friends. Click on the picture of the little printer if you want to print the tip. If you have a “food tip” you would like to share, post a comment with your tip for everyone to enjoy. I am sure there will be tips posted that you already know but we can always learn something new or pass on information to others. Enjoy!
To make your own baking powder if you run out and need to substitute, combine 1 teaspoon baking soda with 2 teaspoons cream of tartar. This equals 1 tablespoon baking powder.
To test baking powder you have on hand for freshness, add 1/2 teaspoon into 1/4 cup hot water. If it fizzes the baking powder is good.

It has been so long since I saw a recipe that called for cream of tartar that I’ve forgotten what it’s used for. Haven’t had any in my spice cabinet in decades!!!
Cream of tartar is best known for helping stabilize and give more volume to beaten egg whites. It is used as the leavening agent in baking powders. Some people add it to their meringue, Mara.
And it’s used in sugar cookies
Please keep these coming, they are so handy. Thank you.
So, does cream of tartar go bad?
I have read that if kept in a cool place cream of tartar does not go bad but I would replace it myself after a couple of years.
A handy “did you know”, Vincent Price’s father helped regulate what’s in baking powder
