Baking soda

Ground cinnamon

Ground nutmeg

Salt

Vanilla

Nuts (optional

Cream cheese frosting ingredients needed:

Cream cheese, softened

Butter

Powdered sugar

I just peel and grate the apples on one of those tin hand graters, which I find is the easiest way to grate apples. Plus it finely grates them and make this cake nice and moist. This cake is made in a 9X13 and comes together pretty quickly after you grate the apples.

  • I have used all kinds of apples in this cake so use what you enjoy!
  • We love the cream cheese frosting, but caramel frosting would be good to! Find a great recipe here.
  • All apples very in size so it’s hard to say exactly how many you need. I used about 4 apples for this recipe.

“I made this cake this weekend to take to a get-together with my husband’s family in Somerset, KY. It was loved by all!! Thanks for making me look good with all the in-laws” – Donna
“Took this cake to a church gathering and came home with an empty pan! Many wanted the recipe. Your website has never let me down, such great recipes!” – Kelly

  1. This is just like my moms recipe, that I had lost. Love it!5 stars

  2. Can you sub unsweeteened applesauce instead of the grated apples?

    1. You can always try it, we have only made the recipe the way it is written.

  3. Can I make 2 8-inch round pans with this recipe?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I have never made it that way but I see no reason why it wouldn’t. Give a try and see!

  4. Do the walnuts have to be toasted or can i just ass them as Raw walnuts?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

I have never toasted them for this cake. Enjoy.

  5. JAMES R ROBINSON says:

my cake didn’t rise very much, is that normal?

    1. The Southern Lady says:

It doesn’t rise as much as some cakes but as you can see in the photo with the 9 x 13 casserole dish, it is almost to the top of the dish.

  6. I made this cake this weekend to take to a get-together with my husband’s family in Somerset, KY. It was loved by all!! Thanks, Judy for making me look good with all the in-laws 🙂

  7. Judy, I can’t imagine someone finding a negative, nasty comment to make regarding your uplifting, delicious website. You’ve heard the old expression about pitying someone more than censuring them. Maybe those people who find fault are so sick and unhappy that they fit that adage. I know you deserve nothing but kindness. Thanks,
    Jane Dow

  8. Judi Hopkins says:

Oh my goodness!!! My mother used to make a Fresh Apple Cake and this looks like it could be the recipe! I have wanted it for years!!! Thank you!!!o

  9. Love apple cakes! With cream cheese frosting, how can I say no? So yummy!

    1. When I bake a cake like this or a spice cake, I’ve eliminated the frosting and pour a jar of baby food fruit pudding over the top – yum. Wish I could go out and pick my own NY state apples right now, my mouth is watering .

  10. How many apples did you use to get 4 cups? Thanks you

    1. I grate the apples with a hand grater until I get enough to make four cups using a cup measuring cup. Probably, around 4 medium apples.
