Classic fruit salad is an easy recipe you will make over and over again.

Classic Fruit Salad

Classic fruit salad is an old fashioned recipe,  sometimes called five cup salad, that can be made using various fruits but I always add miniature marshmallows, coconut, and sour cream. A great salad to accompany any holiday meal or to serve anytime! My family loves this one and I make it a lot during Christmas and Thanksgiving.  This salad is wonderful to take to any gathering or to add to any buffet.  It will keep for several days refrigerated and you could double the recipe.

Classic fruit salad is an old fashioned favorite!

1 cup chunk pineapple, drained
1 cup mandarin oranges, drained
1 cup sour cream
1 cup miniature marshmallows
1 cup shredded coconut

Mix together and refrigerate for at least 3 hours before serving.

Note: Can be made with fresh or canned fruit.  I also use bananas, strawberries, blueberries, raisins, nuts and any other fruit I might have available. You can add more or less fruit. This five cup salad is a very versatile recipe and will keep several days refrigerated.

    my mom used to put 2 large cans of fruit cocktail, the large chunky fruit, and then chop an apple, orange, 1 can pineapple, a banana, pecans, coconut, and then cool whip. is still my favorite salad at the holidays.

  3. I skip the raisins and mix the sour cream with some Eagle Brand. Always a hit.

  4. I made this years ago when my daughter was small. I use everything except for the fresh fruit, I use a large can of fruit cocktail. So good.

  5. Every Christmas my mother would make something similar called Ambrosia, Oranges, apples, coconut, pecans, maraschino cherries, mini marshmalloes, sugar and a splash of OJ. She then served it over fresh Pound Cake.

  9. I make it with fresh navels off the tree, coconut, dates, pecans and cherries….no raisins or canned mandarins. My grandmother made ambrosia with oranges, coconut and cherries for color.

    My mom uses whipping cream, no raisins, add lemon juice, pecans, marshmellows and pineapple….Heavenly Hash…we fight over it!

  13. My grandmother used to make this and called it “Heavenly Hash”, what others called “Ambrosia”. I only ever encountered it in the South. Yummmmm…..

  14. We use Cool Whip and not mayonnaise. Sour cream sounds good.

  15. My grandmother would always make this at Christmas, as I do now, but she always called it Ambrosia.

  16. Greek yogurt with a little honey works well too.

  17. Maraschino Cherries add more color and flavor.

  18. add a lil mayonnaise and that’s my Gramma’s fruit salad! YUM (yes I said mayonnaise…try it)

  19. This was my mom’s “go to” fruit salad minus the raisins and nuts. She called it “Five Cup Salad” because each ingredient was a cup and there were 5 ingredients.
