This Shepherd’s Pie is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!  It is made with hamburger but you could use lamb or mutton.  This is the way my family likes it.

1 to 1 1/2 pounds hamburger
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup chopped green onions (could use regular onion)
1/2 cup chopped celery
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon ketchup
Pinch cayenne or a few drops hot sauce
1 (15 1/4 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained or two cups frozen corn
1 cup frozen peas
3 cups leftover mashed potatoes
1 1/2 to 2 cups shredded cheese (I use cheddar, you can use whatever you like)
Break hamburger into a large skillet and sprinkle the flour over it.  Add the onion and celery and brown.  Drain if needed.  Sprinkle on thyme, basil, garlic, black pepper and salt. Add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and hot sauce along with corn and peas.  Simmer about 15 or 20 minutes.  Pour into a sprayed 9 x 13 casserole dish.  Spread mashed potatoes over top. (Leftover potatoes spread better if heated some in the microwave if they have been refrigerated).  Sprinkle on shredded cheese.  Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes until cheese is melted and casserole is bubbling.  Makes 10 to 12 servings.  Enjoy!

  1. I make this all the time only i add a can of cream of chicken soup to the meat and i don’t use any celery in mine..I add onion, and garlic powder to the meat mixture and a little salt seasoning…Drain a can of corn or green beans and put on top of meat and then the mashed potatoes on top ..I have just added dollops of butter on top of the potatoes and sprinkle paprika on top..or just add the shredded cheese of your choice instead….I love the cream soup in the meat to give a little gravy to the meat…I do put the dish in the oven to heat thru and melt the cheese……Love all your recipes…

  2. This is my italian style shepherds pie. I sauté my ground beef with the other seasonings, then I add eggplant to the dish and continue cooking until the eggplant is soft, I add italian bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese to my taste. Then I spoon the mixture into a large casserole dish, add the cream potatoes on top, cook the fresh corn and spread over top of mashed potatoes. You really need to try it. The eggplant, and italian bread crumbs is a great compliment to the ground beef

  3. never thought of putting cheese on- will do next time! thanks for your recipes. haven’t done most that I’ve saved but all in due time. and totally in love- LOVE – love with all the monkey bread recipes you share,

  4. Is it okay to use fresh mashed potatoes?

  5. Looks wonderful and I will try it! Thank you for sharing. :) In England; when ground or diced roast beef is used it is called a Cottage Pie. (Just a bit of trivia.)

  6. Yes… I would definitely add carrots to this!☺️

  7. If you add can milk instead of whole milk to instant potatoes they will taste more like homemade.

  8. We would call this Cottage Pie in the UK, as it’s made with beef. Shepherd’s pie is traditionally made with lamb, hogget or mutton. Shepherds and cottage pies were historically made on Monday with leftover meat from the Sunday roast. It’s lovely with swede, turnip or parsnip mashed in the topping. I also add diced carrot and celery, and either some beef stock or passata to make a richer gravy in the base. Perect winter food :)

  9. this is also great with left over pot roast!!!!delish!!!!

  10. My Momma used to make this! Delish!

  11. If you are going to use instant, make sure you make them thick enough and if you use a big spoonful of mayo in them they will taste like from scratch.

  12. You can even use tator tots!

  13. Yes, you can used Instant Mashed if you need to.
