HOW TO STORE AND TEST SPICES FOR FRESHNESS
Here are some tips on how to store and test spices for freshness. Many of you probably already know how to test spices but we can always share with others that may not. I love cooking with spices and have several cabinet shelves with numerous bottles of spices. We all need to test spices regularly and throw out the ones that are not fresh and replace with new ones. Once you start using spices in recipes you will see the difference they can make and will love trying new ones. Don’t be afraid to experiment and change up spices in recipes. They are very versatile and can add some great flavors.
The best location to store spices is in a cool, dry spot where they will not be around heat.
Storing spices near a microwave exhaust fan or over the range are two of the worst locations.
Shake ground spices and smell for freshness. They should keep for 2 to 3 years.
Crush dried spices between your fingers and smell for freshness. They should keep for 1 to 3 years.
