Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

Pastry ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup milk I use 2 percent
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Spread for Dough

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar for each piece of dough
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg for each piece of dough
  • 1 slice of margarine for each piece of dough
  • 4 medium apples peeled, cored, and sliced

Sauce

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 cup margarine

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients for the pastry until makes a ball of dough. Divide into 4 pieces, roll out each piece and spread with one tablespoon brown sugar, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg, a pat of margarine or butter, and 1/4 of the apples.
  • In a pan on top of the stove combine the sauce ingredients and bring to a boil. Boil until sugar melts or about 3 or 4 minutes. 
  • Place the dumplings in a baking dish and pour the sauce over them. Bake in preheated 400 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes until brown on top.
  • Spoon extra sauce over dumplings and serve with ice cream or whipped cream. Makes 4 large dumplings.
