Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 ounce package yeast (I used Fleischmanns’s Active Dry yeast)
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup milk scalded or brought just to a boil
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup or 4 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Approximately 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Oil for cooking I use Canola

Chocolate Glaze

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Regular Donut Glaze

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and set aside. Scald the milk on top of the stove, remove and add sugar, salt and butter. Let milk mixture cool till warm and add yeast, egg and vanilla extract. Mix with a spoon.
  • Start adding flour and mix with spoon until you have a dough you can handle. Place dough into a greased bowl, turning once to coat both sides. Let rise about 3 hours until doubled in size. Punch down, roll out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out donuts using a cutter or could use a biscuit cutter and then cut out holes
  • Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and let rise again about 45 minutes. Heat about an inch of oil just to boiling on top of the stove in a large skillet. Drop 2 or 3 donuts into oil at a time. Cook only a few seconds on each side. Remove with spatula onto paper towels to drain. This makes about 2 dozen donuts with 2 dozen holes or you can put the dough from the holes together and roll out for more donuts. Add glaze recipes below. Can use powdered sugar and sprinkles or whatever you like on top.
