This makes a great side dish for any meal.

1/2 stick butter or margarine
3 tablespoons all purpose flour
2 1/2 cups milk
1 small onion, chopped
4 or 5 cups sliced raw potatoes
salt and pepper
Shredded cheese of your choice
Melt butter in skillet;  add flour stirring constantly until well mixed.  Pour in milk and bring to a rolling boil until milk thickens like a sauce or gravy.  Place a layer of potatoes in baking dish.  Sprinkle with chopped onion, salt and pepper.
Pour sauce over potatoes.   Continue until all potatoes are in dish.  Cover and cook in a preheated 350 degree oven for one hour.  Remove cover and cook for 30 more minutes.  Sprinkle with shredded cheese of your choice.  Return to oven until cheese is melted.

Would this recipe be the same if adding cooked ham? I don’t remember cheese with my Grandma’s casserole. I’d love to make that

  4. This looks amazing, what size dish or how many does this serve?

  5. Mmmm…these scalloped potatoes look even better than mashed potatoes, Judy! Wonderful comfort food…
